School Hall Refurbishment

Main hall refurbishment and classroom refurbishments - Contract sum £200000.

This school has over a 1000 pupil attending on a daily basis and is one of the busiest primary and Junior schools in the Wakefield area.  This project involved working in a live school for 4 weeks prior to summer school holidays as well as working over the 6-week holiday period in August/September.  The school was fully occupied in the pre-holiday period in June/July and therefore the first work undertaken was the segregation works of school staff and children from FSH trades.  This was carried out using screens, barriers and signage to make the routes clear that children should take.

FSH provided the school with a weekly phased programme of works and plans of the school showing the areas in which FSH would be working, clearly marking the agreed route diversion that children will need to take to circumvent around the hall and playground.  This weekly update allowed teachers to keep children informed of the diversions and to organise a school fire drill for children working in the area of diversions.

FSH group operatives were fully inducted to make all staff aware of the health and safety aspects and complexities of working in these confines of an occupied school. FSH staff are also DBS compliant.

The work undertaken was the removal of a school hall floor and rotten joists, which were replaced with a beam and block floor, overlaid with a new sports floor. Alongside this there was hacking off of damp plaster and new DPC and tanking upto 1 meter high to perimeters of walls. Externally, drainage and fall pipes were altered to successfully take the rainwater away. Included in the package was the alteration and remodelling of existing changing rooms and showers into two new classrooms, as well as a general scheme to swap out old fluorescent lights to new energy efficient LED lights.

5 classrooms were DPC injected, rewired, plastered, with new floors and finally all areas were re decorated.
